HOMEWORK: Please study for tomorrow's spelling quiz. Words can be found on the Language Arts page.
Thursdays are usually a work heavy day for us in Division 8, but today was a day of exploration and experimentation. Following our spelling review this morning, we headed to the gym for a Tae Kwon Do lesson put on the Black Belt Academy. The students learned the virtues of focus, respect and discipline. Following recess, we read Chapter 10 of the Breadwinner as a class, and the students were given time to complete their Novel Study Questions & their Operation Waterproof work booklets. At lunchtime, we headed back on the bus to Al Anderson Memorial Pool for more of our swimming program. Lots of fun, lots of smiling faces! We capped our day with a bit of time to eat, and then clean up. HOMEWORK: Please study for tomorrow's spelling quiz. Words can be found on the Language Arts page.

Another fanstastic day in Division 8! We began the day with music, then a quick snack break, before heading into the gym for some Doctor Dodgeball. After recess, the students had an hour to work on their Breadwinner, Spelling and Operation Waterproof work, and then do some typing before clean up and heading for the bus. In the afternoon the students did their classroom and pool sessions with the Operation Waterproof instructors. (I would love to share pictures of all of them having fun in and out of the water, but because the classes are mixed with students from both Nicomekl and Alice Brown Elementary, it is nearly impossible to take photos.) When we returned to James Kennedy, we had just enough time to eat our lunches, and get a few more pages completed in their Operation Waterproof workbooks.
HOMEWORK: Any student who didn't hand in their Tae Kwon Do permission forms, you are lucky, as our lesson will take place THURSDAY during our regular gym time. Please complete and return the form tomorrow morning if you haven't already. REMINDER: Students need to have a spare pair of pants and a shirt to bring with them for Operation Waterproof tomorrow. They will wear the extra clothing over their swimsuits into the pool tomorrow, so a plastic shopping bag or two to pack them into after the lesson wouldn't be a bad idea either. PLAYLAND GROUPS & DRIVER/CHAPERONES: Mr & Mrs. Angell: Anneya, Angela, Avery, Arsany & Owen Mrs. Wagner: Aubrey, Megan O, Xavier & Matthew Mr. Hill: Cooper, Tyler, Ben & Caden Mr. Tubbs: Emily, Blake, Connor & Lukas Mrs. Riego: Hannah, Maya, Jazzy & Mookuku Mrs. Greene & Mrs. Jenkins-Bushey: Megan G, Alex, Jaylin, Matt T & Jun Wow, if I thought the runners were quick at the Track Meet yesterday, they had nothing on how fast the day sped by today. We began our day with some Brain Busting Math courtesy of our Kangaroo Math practice test, then discussed and organized our schedule for next week's Baking assignments, then mapped out our ride groups for our Playland trip on the 22nd. (See information below) Following recess, the students worked on their own to create sentences using their spelling words, as well as reading and answering question from Chapters 8 - 9 of the Breadwinner. Shortly before lunchtime, we packed up and headed for Al Anderson Pool, so that the students could take part in Operation Waterproof. When we returned to school at the end of the day, there was just enough time to eat, and squeeze in a bit more time to work on their assignments from earlier in the day.
HOMEWORK: Students need to have their Breadwinner chapters 8 - 9 questions and vocabulary completed by THURSDAY, while they also should be studying this week's spelling words. REMINDER: Please be sure to pack a swimsuit and towel for tomorrow's day three of Operation Waterproof. NOTE: Students were sent home with TWO permission slips today. One was a feedback form for improved biking infrastructure around our school, while the second pink coloured form, was for giving permission for your child to take part in a Tae Kwon Do lesson tomorrow in gym class tomorrow. ***IF YOUR CHILD DID NOT BRING THE FORM HOME, PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR CONSENT*** Thursday, June 7th - 9:00am - 10:30am Presenters: Megan's group Aubrey's group Cooper's group Lukas' group Xavier's group Bakers: Megan's Mom Anneya's Mom Aubrey's Mom Jaylin's Stepmom Friday, June 8th - 9:45am - 10:30am Presenters: Hannah's group Arsany's group Anneya's group Bakers: Hannah's Mom Anneya's Mom I was lucky enough to take in most of the district Track and Field Meet earlier today, and I am super proud of all our students who participated, and of all the JKE athletes who represented our school at Walnut Grove Athletic Park. I was able to snap a few photos of our Division 8 athletes in action, and you can see them below!
REMINDER: Be sure to have your swimsuit and towel with your to school tomorrow. NOTE: We will assign our Baking Dates, and Playland groups at school on Tuesday. THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS WHO CONTACTED ME TO HELP WITH DRIVING & BAKING! It was a busy and musical start to the day! While the students made their way to the library to visit with Mme. Gammel, Mme. Van Bemmel and I made our way to each of the school's grade 7 classes to drum up support and recruit students to help out with Sports Day. Midway through library, the class made their way down to the gym to take in a concert by a local Jazz trio. We returned from the musical presentation shortly before recess, just in time to grab a quick snack. When the class returned we mapped out what lays ahead for us in our final 5 weeks of class, and I distributed the students each a hard copy of the proposed June schedule to take home (posted below). Once that was taken care of, the class was given the challenge of finishing their reading of Chapter 7 of the Breadwinner, and finding their vocabulary and writing a summary. The goal was to be done in time, so that we could head outside for a quick game of kickball, but the majority of the class were still working we they were dismissed for lunch. Following the lunch break, the class was given an hour to find others to play board games with. I was impressed to see usual groups of friends split up and join other classmates to play. With about 40 minutes left in our day, we cleaned up and did the Rainbow Dash drawing lesson that is featured on our Student Gallery and Art page. REMINDER: Students who are competing in the District Track and Field Meet on Monday need to meet in the school gym at no later than 8:20am. All other Division 8 students, will be taking the bus to the Al Anderson Pool for their Operation Waterproof Swimming lessons starting on Monday. Students need to pack appropriate swimwear and a towel. Today went by so quickly, that it was over, in what seemed like a blink of the eye. The class did a great job on their multiplication and division of fractions questions this morning, as we reviewed the steps necessary to complete their worksheets. I had assigned the worksheets to be completed today, but a number of students needed more practice in order to understand the process. After a good 45 minutes, the majority seemed to have a good handle on things, so we quickly broke for snack, before making our way to the gym to play Mat Ball. Following the recess break, Manon from the Sustainable Energy Association rejoined us to further talk about the steps we can each take to reduce green house gas emissions. The class wowed her with their knowledge and enthusiasm for the topic, which made me very proud. After lunch, we had time to break the class into groups based on their comfort with Amusement park rides, in preparation for next month's trip to Playland. (We are still looking for parent drivers. Many students have told me that their parents are driving, but I have only received emails from 3 so far. We will need at least another 3 or possibly 4 drivers.) To finish off our afternoon, we met up with the rest of the school in the gym for a Rock n Roll and Blues concert put on by the Blues Berries. Lots of fun!!
HOMEWORK: Tomorrow is the deadline for getting Playland payment & permission slips in. Also, please finish the 4 pages of fractions multiplication and division for tomorrow. NOTE: Tomorrow's Fun Friday theme is Board Games Day. Students are encouraged to bring a favourite board game to play with their classmates in the afternoon. No video games. It was a noisy, but exciting start to the day, as the students had the chance to test out which instruments they might want to play next year in Grade 6 band. Lots of excitable boys and girls this morning! With the gym being closed for the day, we moved gym class outside for another game of California Kickball. Despite my best effort to make teams equal, Team Megatron thumped Team Superkuku 17 - 8. th After recess, we had a visit from Mr. Vaillancourt's grade 7's who spoke to the class about environmental stewardship, pollution, and recycling. For the final half hour before lunch, the students worked to improve their typing skills. In the afternoon, our little buddies made their way to our room for a planning, design and building activity. To close things out, we did a coat room clean up, then had a couple of minutes to get started on the Fractions multiplication and division worksheets.
HOMEWORK: Please finish both fractions worksheets. Due Thursday morning. Also, please be sure to have the Playland permission forms and funds in by no later than May 25th. NOTE: Here are some important upcoming dates. May 28 - Start of Operation Waterproof Swimming Program, and District Track and Field Meet for qualifying athletes. June 7th & 8th- Bilingual Baking project baking days June 19 (or 20) - JKE Sports Day June 22 - Playland June 27 - Cultus Lake Waterslides Perfect weather, good focus, and a great day in Division 8 today! The day began with a visit from Ms. Nurse who put the students through their Math paces, in preparation for out practice "Kangaroo Math" quiz in a couple of weeks. Following math, it was snack break, then we had an early gym class, and played a game of California kickball. Following the recess break, we read and worked on our vocabulary from Chapter 6 of the Breadwinner. In the afternoon, we were fortunate enough to join forces with Ms. Palmer's class for a class presentation on body image, confidence, positivity and perseverance. We book ended our day with Math, and we learned more about multiplying and dividing fractions. (CLICK FOR HOW TO VIDEOS HERE)
It was a bit of a disjointed day today in terms of flow, but to their credit the students made the best of it, and made some good progress on their Bilingual Baking Assignment. The day began with a visit to the library to see Madame Gammel, then it was back to get ourselves organized for our baking projects. After recess, the groups finalized their responsibility lists, and their recipes and were given time to share their work to me at [email protected] using their Office 365 accounts. Before the hot lunch break, we snuck in our weekly spelling quiz, and the vast majority of the class did exceptionally well! NICE!! After lunch, we had a few brief minutes to read before we were called down to the gym for a presentation from the Rick Hansen Foundation. We capped our day with a build, make or create hour, in which they could draw, write, paint, construct or play games that came from their imagination.
HOMEWORK: Please make sure every group has shared their Office 365 document with me. It must have the full recipe, and directions for their chosen baked goods, as well as the French translations of the ingredients and their list of responsibilities. Also, please remember our deadline for Playland payments and permission forms is this coming Friday, the 25th of May. NOTE: Please remember there are no classes scheduled on Monday, because of the Victoria Day Long Weekend. We kick started our day with an incredible video demonstrating what can be done, rather than what can't, called "The Superhumans". Super cool, check it out below!! It was the lead in to our afternoon assembly with Michael Bortolotto, who shared his story of perseverance, overcoming bullying and the power of friendship. Before heading off to gym class, we finalized our baking groups and settled on the goodies. (See list on the Math Page) My hope is that we will be able to do our baking demonstrations on June 7th and 8th, and I will be looking for 2 - 3 parent volunteers to help with the actual baking of the cookies and treats. Following recess, the class played a couple games of spelling Bingo, and then we did a creative writing activity called Story Starters. In the afternoon, Mrs. Gore joined us to hear the students read their incredibly imaginative Story Starters stories . At 1:30, the grade 3, 4 and 5 classes headed into the gym to hear an inspirational talk from Michael Bortolotto. (learn more about him by clicking here) HOMEWORK: Please study for your spelling quiz, and remember to bring your Playland Permission Forms and $$ if you haven't already. |
