HOMEWORK: As mentioned, the students need to finish their Timeline activity. Also, tomorrow is the final day of the month for our table groups, and we will have a Trivia Challenge reviewing the topics we have covered in the first month of class. Finally, tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day, and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt.
It was an assorted day of Socials, Physical Education, English and even slipped in some Math. The day began with some time to continue to work on their writing from Wednesday. From there we slid into some work on French colours and vocabulary, basing our answers on their classmates' Introduction Cards. (Which can be seen on the Art Gallery Page.) Just before recess we headed off to the gym, to put play out the last few games of our 4 team dodgeball tournament. After recess, we reviewed our weekly spelling words, then did a song close to work on our listening. In the afternoon, it was time to look further into the impact that Colonization had on our Indigenous populations. The students helped create a timeline, and then copy it out in their Social Studies section of their binder. (If they didn't complete their timeline, it is due for homework.)

Our day began with how our Tuesday ended. The students continued to work on their Introduction Cards. The cards will help introduce themselves to their Little Buddies class, and give the kindergarten students (and teacher) a chance to pair up with students with similar interests. It also gives them a chance to make something that is for a younger audience, and therefore make choices that are appropriate for 5 and 6 year olds. A little later in the morning, we did our first creative writing exercise of the year. The students were asked to think back to what they learned about in "Fatty Legs." Each of their stories began with "Margaret dropped her bags at the door, and stared across the empty dormitory..." From the peace and quiet of reading of writing, when jumped right into the chaos of our Dodgeball Tournament!
After recess, we continued with our Math Review package, going over place value, decimals, and fractions. After our regular Silent Reading period (which was excellent), we took some notes on Simple Machines, took a quick walk to look for simple machines around out school, then did our regular Wednesday book exchange. For the final half our of the day, the students had a chance to finish up any incomplete work, read their new books, or play quietly with a partner. HOMEWORK: No homework tonight, but please remember to bring indoor shoes, and to return your Science World Permission forms. To help kick start our drizzly Monday morning, we played a good old fashioned game of Telephone. The students were divided into two teams, and given tongue twisters to pass along to their teammates. Lots of fun, but not a ton of accuracy. We definitely need to refine our listening and deciphering skills! French was considerably more successful, as we reviewed our colours once again, and students offered to point out different items around the class and ask "Quelle couleur est...?" (What colour is?) We then worked on creating French flashcards, both before and after recess. Before the lunch break, we read aloud and discussed "Fatty Legs." After lunch we read silently for about 20 minutes, then headed to the gym to hear some stories from a Haida storyteller, who captivated us with aboriginal legends and stories. For the final part of the day, we headed outside for an abbreviated DPA, then back into class to clean up and go home.
HOMEWORK: Please bring a pair of indoor shoes for in the class, as well as in the gym. Every student who brings an appropriate pair of indoor / gym shoes, will earn 5 points for their table group! JKE teacher's headed to class to learn this afternoon, which is why James Kennedy students were given an early weekend pass. While division 8 students were in session today, they had their Spelling quiz, music class, and had time just before dismissal, to either read, write, draw, code, or the most popular choice, play some educational games with their classmates. Have an excellent weekend!!!
HOMEWORK: No homework for the weekend, though we are still missing some information forms for both the class and the office, so if you have not handed those in, please bring them on Monday. NOTE: If any parents missed the Meet the Teacher Night and would still like to ask some question, or did attend, and had a question, please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] Our day kicked off with an exciting, if not thrilling, game of Spelling Bingo! As will be the case most of this year, students needed to put their vocabulary knowledge to the test to win. Congratulations to our big winners today, John & Ben! From there, we turned our attention to solving some French phrases. The sentences involved identifying the colours of common items in class, clothing, and parts of the body. We will continue to build their vocabulary next week, but I am very happy with their progress in French to date. Bien fait!!! In gym, we played King of the Court Dodgeball. After recess, the students were given an Online Shopping Math Challenge. (Attached below) Each group of 2 - 3 students had to shop and spend as close to $1234 on either walmart.ca or amazon.ca. I absolutely loved watching the students quibble over whether they should buy Pampers or Pineapples! In the afternoon, I read with both Maya and Jun, while others read silently at their seats. We sat together and read another couple chapters of "Fatty Legs", before watching a pair of videos about Residential Schools. (Both videos can be found on the Social Studies Page.) Despite the somber and serious nature of the topic, the students showed incredible empathy and understanding of the issue. HOMEWORK: Please study for tomorrow's Spelling Quiz REMINDER: Friday is an early dismissal day, and students will be let out for the weekend at 11:30am tomorrow.
We hit the midway point of our week, and began our day with a review of our Spelling List. Embarrassingly, we discovered I had spelt Moccasin wrong, so we corrected my oversight and went through the definitions. Following a short vocabulary quiz, we took the remaining time before recess to complete our Orange Shirt Art. With the gym being used for school photos, we took our class outside to play. After recess, and a brief lesson on decimals and how we use them in every day life, it was time for some online shopping. The students were broken into groups and tasked with pricing out: a Pineapple, a Pack of Pencils, a Pizza, a dozen Doughnuts, a pack of Lego, a reusable water bottle and a Nintendo 3DS. From there were did a number of exercises based on the prices they were able to find online at Walmart.ca. The back half of our day included an introductory video about simple machines, a trip to the library, and then silent reading.
HOMEWORK: No homework tonight, but please review your spelling words. REMINDER: Thursday is Meet the Teacher Night. I will be making a quick presentation and answering questions. (Please remember this isn't Parent-Teacher Conferences, and it is intended to be a chance to meet the teacher, and find out what is planned for the year, not to discuss individual student achievement) Friday, is early dismissal at 11:30am. Tuesday started with a trip to Music class. When the students returned, they were treated to a visit from Mrs. Pimentel, who introduced them to a new set of Digital Building Blocks that we just received as part of her Inspire project to help the students foster their creativity and inventiveness. We also discussed out coding and robotics clubs, that will be offered later in the school year. Following Mrs. Pimentel's visit, the students received this week's spelling list. All the spelling words this week are taken from a book called "Fatty Legs", that we began reading after recess in class today. Be sure to ask the your child what Kamiks, Ptarmigans and Schooners are. After more discussion and explanation of the book, it was lunch time. Following a very quiet silent reading period, it was off to the gym, for a very loud and enthusiastic Benchball tournament with Mr. Chan's class. At the end of the day, we reflected on the history and meaning of "Orange Shirt Day", before the students put their artistic skills to work to design an orange shirt of their own. At 2:15, Mrs. Lainchbury took over in the classroom, so that Cooper, Alex C, Maya and I could head out for our first Cross Country Race of the season. HOMEWORK: Students should look over their spelling list and write out definitions for each of the words. Also, if any student has not handed in their Me! Poster or their Information forms, please hand them in as soon a possible. REMINDER: Wednesday is picture day. Thursday is meet the teacher from 6 - 7pm in room #147. Friday is early dismissal day (students are dismissed at 11:30am) We managed to sneak outside before the skies opened up this morning, for a warm up activity called Cyclops tag. The game is intended to give the students a better appreciation for what people with visual impairments need to deal with on a daily basis. Following the activity, we headed indoors to review our French colours with a colour by numbers worksheet (attached on the French Page). Once the pencil crayons and felts were packed away, we then corrected our spelling quizzes, and then turned our attention to editing and condensing our school's PAWS statements, into something a little more concise, easier to remember and understand (see below). Just before the lunch recess bell, we had an unexpected and unscheduled fire drill, and I am happy to say, the students reacted flawlessly, as we all made it to the upper field in record time, and in an appropriate manner. As it turned out, it was a false alarm, but I was glad to see the students exit with purpose and the necessary urgency. Once we put the wraps on the extended lunch hour, it was time to finish their Me! Posters. Thanks to Megan G, Megan O and Matt T for all their help in putting our artwork up in the hall for everyone to see. HOMEWORK: Please finish the French Colour By Numbers worksheet, as well as the Me! Poster if they weren't completed in class. REMINDER: It's a busy week at JKE! Tuesday is our first Cross Country race of the season, Wednesday is photo day, Thursday is Meet the Teacher Night (6 - 7 pm in Room #147), and Friday is early dismissal at 11:30am.
I've got to say it...it was an excellent week in Division 8! I was really impressed with the level of collaboration by the students with each other, and their receptiveness to adapting to a new teacher, my expectations and our classroom rules. Today was a nice way to cap off our week. In the morning the students headed off to Music with Mr. Barkman, before returning to discuss Terry Fox's legacy, how he still inspires people across Canada and the World. (See the video below) The students also created word webs about what it means to be "Inspirational." The students also had their first Spelling Quiz today, and had time to work on their "Me!" posters. After lunch the students had the chance to read, write, draw, play cooperative games or do coding as part of our Fun Friday. At 1:30pm the class headed down the join the rest of the Intermediate grades for a Welcome Assembly, and to discuss Terry Fox, ahead of our Terry Fox Run. REMINDER: Please return the information forms that were handed out in class this week. It was another great day in Division 8 today, with a dash of Spelling, Art, French, PE and even some music!! Bingo was on the menu first thing, as we used our Weekly spelling words to fill in our Bingo cards. After an excited win by Matt and then by Caden, we transitioned to snack break, and then into the Gym to join Mr. Chan's class for Bench Ball. After Recess, we finally had our first French lesson, and watched two french music video, and reviewed our French colours and numbers. (Videos can be seen on the French Page) In the afternoon, the students worked on their "ME" poster Art project.
HOMEWORK: Please review Spelling Words for Friday's Quiz. REMINDER: Orange Shirts are on sale again tomorrow at lunch. Shirts are $15. |
