Thursday morning began with a mat relay race as part of a team building exercise in gym class. Then following a short snack break, the students left for Music class. After recess, the students got to present their Identity projects, one final time, this time to their classmates. In the afternoon we all attended the JKE Diversity and Respect Week Assembly. Our very own Gideon helped open the ceremonies by acknowledging that our school is built on the traditional territory of local First Nations' People. Maggie too, had a part in the ceremony, helping explain part of her Identity project. All in all, it was a great day at school!

Such as amazing day of presentations today, as our class took part in the Identity Day Walking Tour! Gideon's Identity Video Project! The students were fantastic today! We began our day with some videos and a discussion about Divesity in Canada. After a very positive and informative discussion, we moved on to work time or presentation practice time for the Identity projects. After recess, any student who was not finished had the option of working on their project, while the rest of the class took part in a Math problem challenge. In the afternoon, we returned to Mrs. O'Shea's class to help our Lil' Buddies complete their Identity art projects.
HOMEWORK: Students need to have their Identity Projects ready to go for tomorrow. It was a quick and easy day for those in attendance for the half day. The students had the chance to work on their Identity Projects, as well as on Reflex Math and Typing. We also discussed the shape of the day on Identity Day (Wednesday), and the proposed schedule is posted below.
NOTE: The students should bring as much of their projects with them to school tomorrow as possible, as I will be giving them the first 45 - 60 minutes of the day to finish things up, or to practice presenting to friends. Projects are NOT due until Wednesday, but it would be great if students could be done by tomorrow. As for presenting, it will be done as a gallery walk, so that students will only be presenting their work to a small captive audience, similar to what they'd do at a Science Fair. It wasn't the easiest start of the day for the students of Division 8, as we jumped right into French translation exercises to begin our day. (You can find the phrases on the French page.) Once we had packed up our binders, we turned on the laptops and classroom iPads and prepared for the arrival of Mme. Small's class. The students and I helped get them set up on their Office 365 accounts, so that they could get access to their One Drives, Word and Power Point programs. After recess the students took some time to work on their typing skills, their math fact fluency and their Identity projects. (See list of topics below) This afternoon, we had presentations from Abbie, Gavin, Slade and Sandhya. HOMEWORK: With a shortened week, a half day on Monday and presentations due next Wednesday, students should make sure they have a well thought out plan for their Identity project. First days back after a long weekend can be difficult, but even after 4 days away the class showed up ready to work this morning. The day began with some Math Long division word problems, which tested the students math skills, but also their listening and deductive reasoning skills. From there, we kept with Math, and corrected the final two pages of our Superheroes work booklets. After a snowy and icy recess outside, the students returned indoors to complete our RESPECT mind-mapping activity (see below). In the final 45 minutes of morning class time, the students divided their time between free writing, and Reflex Math. In the afternoon, they read for 20 minutes, then moved on to basketball dribbling, passing and shooting drills in the gym. When we returned after PE class I outlined, and discussed the Identity Project that they will be working on this week. (The project It is posted on the English page)
Our day kicked off with a trip to the gym for a half hour of dribbling, juking and ferocious defending, as both classes joined together for simultaneous Laundry Basket Ball matches. After having built up a hunger, the class tore through their snacks, before joining Ms. Hu in the music room for Ukulele lessons. After recess, we learned more about the frustrations facing some women in Japan, as they deal with the realities and expectations of Valentine's Day in their country. Before lunch we were able to escape outside for a bit of time in the snow. In the afternoon, the class took part in Read, Write, Draw or Play, and then they completed their Chinese New Year's art work, before tidying up for the long weekend.
*No homework, or school on Friday or Monday.* HAVE A GREAT FAMILY DAY LONG WEEKEND!! Following back-to-back snow days, it was back to work today in room 147. There was a pent up buzz in the room when the door opened, so rather than fight the excitement, we spent the first 20 minutes of the day, finding out how each other spent our two extra days off. Once we had determined that Jack had the most eventful snow days, we dove into correcting our French quizzes from Friday. Following a snowy recess break, the students got out of their winter gear, and settled in with the MacBooks to work on their Reflex Math and their typing. In the afternoon our focus shifted to Chinese New Year's, and we learned more about the annual celebration. (See the Social Studies page for today's video and information package) We capped off the day with learning more about the Chinese zodiac and did some associated artwork.
(Sorry no photos today) After missing our PE block earlier in the week, we finally got back into the gym this morning to kick off our Basketball unit. We began with a brief overview of simple basketball rules, then played a modified version of "Laundry Basketball". After a return to the class for snack, it was off to the music room to practice playing Ukulele with Ms. Hu. After recess, we finished up six more fantastic Human Body Systems presentations. (Gavin & Abigail will present next week) After lunch, the class read quietly for 20 minutes, then worked on completing their math Superhero packages, before finishing the day with a Mapping activity.
HOMEWORK: Please finish the Asia Mapping activity, by properly labeling and colouring the sheet. Instruction page is posted on the Social Studies page. Also please be sure to study for tomorrow's French Quiz. All the words can be found on the French page. REMINDER: Tomorrow is Hot Lunch, as well as FUN FRENGLISH FRIDAY!!! |
