Lots of iPad and Laptop time today, as the class navigated through completing their Online Shopping Challenge Power Point Presentation, as well as a Power Point outlining key points from the issues of Climate Change, Jobs, Health Care, Child Care and Gun laws for each of the 5 political parties running in our Langley riding. I have attached a link that will take you to the CBC News page that helped us compile our information on the party platforms. ( https://tinyurl.com/y3d2s94a )
NOTE: I had forgotten to hand out this week's spelling list, but it is posted on the English Page . REMINDER: We are traveling via bus to Science World tomorrow, and will return around 5pm in the afternoon. Please be sure to pack snacks and a lunch for your child, as it will be a full day of fun and learning! Despite not getting to take in this year's Tuff Wally, it still ended up being a pretty great day in Division 7!! We eased into our day by taking time to finish up the Respect Statement 3D art assignment we began on Thursday. Shortly before 10am, the grade sixes grabbed their instruments and headed for band practice, while the grade fives headed outside with Mrs. King. After recess, it was time again to take our talents outside, as the table groups competed against one another in a high energy Scramble Sentence Race Game. In the afternoon, the grade fives finally had their chance to visit with Ms. Hu for Music, while the rest of the class shipped out for Enrichment. To complete our day of outdoor activities and learning, all the fifth graders reconvened to play California Kickball until the end of the day.
HOMEWORK: Any student who hasn't shared their group's Online Shopping Challenge Word Document, should do so this weekend. REMINDER: There is no school on Monday, as it is Thanksgiving Monday. I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A FANTASTIC LONG WEEKEND WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY! We took a much overdue break from Fitness testing today, to let the classes duke it out in an epic game of four corners dodgeball. When we returned, I gave the class a tutorial on how to sign in and use Power Point. After recess, the students had time to work in partners to create their own Power Point presentations on any topic they wanted. In the afternoon, they somewhat silently read for 20 minutes before I showed all of the PPT presentations they'd created earlier in the day. We capped our day with some brainstorming of Class Respect Statements, then used those statements to include in a 3D hand drawing activity. The tutorial can be found on the Art Gallery page. ATTENTION: Our planned trip to WGSS to watch this year's TUFF WALLY has unfortunately needed to be cancelled. Walnut Grove Secondary has requested that only Grade 7 classes from around Walnut Grove attend as spectators, as their registration numbers are higher than expected. It is unfortunate for sure, but it is important that we respect the school's wishes. Provided Mother Nature cooperates, I will take the students outside to do something fun in place of our scheduled trip to watch Tuff Wally, so please still send your children in appropriate clothing for the weather. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but thank you for your understanding. It has been a pleasure to see the students grow their practical math skills over the past few weeks. Today, those abilities were put to the test as they worked through pricing out a Thanksgiving dinner. Another skill the class has been working on is time management, and I was proud to see them accomplish their assignment within the time given earlier today. Once all their assignments were handed in, the class had a snack, then either went to grade 6 band or took part in grade 5 health class. Between recess and lunch the class had one last chance to do screen captures of their Online Shopping Challenge items, and add the final prices to their Word Document. After lunch, we had a presentation on Aboriginal Art and the class had the chance to do some beaded flowers.
HOMEWORK: The students need to complete adding screen shots and final prices for each of their items on their Microsoft Word document. They will need access to a computer, a tablet of even a phone to complete this task. NOTE: I am looking for two parent volunteers to join us as chaperones next Wednesday for our field trip to Science World. There is no cost, and you are welcome to join us on the bus ride there and back. If you would like to join us, please send me an email at: [email protected] With it pouring outside all morning, it was great to be inside, and how better to start our school week than getting our hearts racing. Fitness testing was first out of the chute this morning, as the students completed their week 2 sit ups, while half the class completed the sit and reach, long jump and the shuttle run. When we returned to class, they had the remainder of the morning to finish up their "All About Me" booklets for the Lil' Buddies. (You can see most of outside covers the booklets on the Art Gallery Page.) In the mid-part of our day we went over the answers from our Social Studies work booklet about the Federal Election and marked and corrected the Math handout from last week. In the afternoon, the students got the chance to share their art booklets with the kindergartners and spend some time getting to know their Little Buddies a bit better. For the final 60 minutes of the day, the students were tasked with trying to get all their screen shots for their Online Shopping Challenge, and before we knew it, it was the end of the day.
HOMEWORK: Only a few permission slips are missing, so PLEASE get them in as soon as possible, as Science World is only 9 days away, and our first walking trip takes place this Friday, as we head over to the High School to watch the Tuff Wally competition. NOTE: Thank you to all the parents who have stepped up and volunteered to drive for our skating program next month at Sportsplex. We are still a few drivers short, so if anyone is still able or interested in helping out, it would be Wednesday morning from 845am - 11am, for six weeks beginning November 6th. Our day started really well, with some spelling review Bingo, then a visit from Mrs. King, but as the day wore on, the excitement of the weekend seemed to get the better of the class, as they collectively struggled to stay on task. We did manage to hunker down long enough to complete and mark our spelling quizzes and put another dent in our Online Shopping Challenge assignment. For the last 90 minutes of the day, I'd planned to teach the class about creating screen captures using a window's computer, but the activity fell flat on its face. Partly because of attention span & partly due to technological challenges. I have attached the instructions sheet I used to help guide them through the process, so feel free to explore and play around with using the Snipping Tool if you have a PC at home. With a Mac, it's a lot easier, and you can screen capture images by pressing Command + Shift + 4 to bring up a capture box. REMINDER: About 9 of our 26 students still have permission forms missing for our Community Walking form, Science World and skating. Some of those are also missing their room parent information forms. I need the form for Walking & Science Wold turned in as soon as possible. After a couple days off from Fitness Testing, it was back to the gym to take another hack at it. The class divided into 2 groups, with one side doing planks and standing long jumps, while the other side competed in the shuttle run. When we returned to class, time was given to grab a quick snack, before launching into an Art project for their Lil' Buddies meant to help introduce our students to their Kindergarten friends. After recess, the students got back at crunching numbers for their Online Shopping Challenge. In the afternoon, we read more from "My Name is Seepeetza", and then finished the questions from our reading comprehension on the Canadian Election. HOMEWORK: Please study for tomorrow's Spelling Quiz. (Words can be found on the English Page.) REMINDER: We are still missing a number of permission forms. I have told the students that every student who has ALL of their permission forms in will earn 3 points each for their table group. The Permission Forms in question are: the Walking permission form, the Skating Permission Form, and the Science World Permission Form. Also, Room parent information forms are due as soon as possible. NOTE: I have attached a poster for a Community Basketball Program that students may be interested in participating in.
No photos today...but that doesn't mean we didn't do a TON of stuff. Our day began with the class dividing into two groups one to work on a Math Calculations worksheet, while the other half plugged away on their Online Shopping Challenge assignment. After about 45 minutes, the groups swapped tasks and worked until the recess bell. After recess, I gave the entire class a bit more time to finish of their math worksheet, then headed across the school to meet their Lil' Buddies for the first time. In the afternoon, the class had an abbreviated reading period, then read through and discussed more about the upcoming Federal election. All of our words for spelling this week are posted on the English Page, but also I have embedded a screen shot of the words in today's recap to save you from needing to download them (if you'd rather not). NOTE: I asked all the students to put their Science World permission forms in their backpacks this morning, so please check for them after school today. Also, if you could please sign and return the Community Walk permission forms and get those back to me, I would really appreciate it. (Skating forms would be awesome too...but aren't as urgent.) It was moving day in Division 7 as the students shuffled seats and formed new table groups today. The first chance to earn points came with our warm up which included some geography, ordering and french questions to get their brains working this morning. We then handed back some work, then tidied up and organized their cubbies, before heading off to Band or Health class. After recess we tried again to get all the student up and running on their Office 365 accounts and did a little work using Microsoft Word. The grade sixes lent their expertise to help demonstrate and help their grade 5 classmates. After lunch, the students did their 12 minute run and sit ups as part of their fitness testing unit. Back in class, I read another 20 pages of My Name is Seepeetza, then the Grade Fives left for music and the Grade Sixes stayed behind to brainstorm ideas for their Young Entrepreneurs projects.
HOMEWORK: There isn't any homework, but I have posted the Spelling words on the ENGLISH PAGE if anyone wants to start reviewing them. I also sent home some permission forms for Skating, and for local community walking field trips yesterday, and I am hoping to get those back as soon as possible. I will also be sending home our Science World Field Trip permission forms tomorrow, and will need those back asap as well, as Science World is only 2 short weeks away! The good news is that the cost is mostly covered through funding, so it will only be a small $5 charge to help cover the bussing costs. REMINDER: Wednesday is Grade 6 immunization day at JKE. |
