We needed to jam in a full day, into what was essentially a half day in class today, as the students had their Library block in the morning, and then were dismissed for the Teachers' Collaboration afternoon at 1:30pm. The day kicked off with a good old game of telephone, followed up by a review of some of the French verbs we started to learn before the holiday break. Following the reading of chapter 21 of "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library", we discussed how to complete the Lil' Buddies Hi-5 projects. During our abbreviated afternoon session, the kindergartners made their way to our room to visit, to meet their new Big Buddies, to get their hand painted and to answer questions about some of their favourite things.
The class definitely had their work boots on today, as I challenged them with a dictation and some fitness testing. As per our usual Thursday morning routine, it was off the gym to get blood pumping. The students established their baselines for flexibility, explosive power, endurance and core strength. Following snack, music and recess, the students returned to either work on their Reflex Math, or do small group reading of our class novel "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library." (Thank you to Maggie, Ethan, Alissa and KG for offering to read to their classmates!) In the afternoon, we did, what I thought, was going to be a very difficult Dictation activity, but when all the pencils were put down and the dust settled, the class had confidently scored an average of over 95% accuracy! WOW!
HOMEWORK: Please take time to review this week's New Year's inspired spelling words ahead of tomorrow's Spelling Quiz. (The words can be found on the English page). Lots of brain bursting math this morning to help get their problem solving skills sharpened, but also to have the students think about which math skills they need to solve certain word problems. After some initially puzzled faces, the class hunkered down, put their thinking caps on and got to solving the problems. We then corrected the word problems as a class, in the process reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, decimals, fractions, time and measurement. After recess, we moved on to typing practice, and math fact fluency. In the afternoon, the class read silently for 20 minutes, before we dove back into another 2 chapters of "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". We talked about learning styles earlier in the day, with that in mind, I decided to project the pages of the book onto the screen, so that the students could better follow along with the story. Our day finished off with the class putting the final touches on their "High Five" resolutions project.
HOMEWORK: Please review this week's spelling words, as I will be doing a dictation tomorrow, featuring all 20 of the spelling words. REMINDER: We will be continuing our Fitness Unit tomorrow, so please make sure your child has appropriate clothing and footwear. Writing and Math review ruled the day today, as the class worked on some story sequencing activities. I have attached a copy of the worksheets on the English page. In the mid-part of the day, the students worked on their good copies of their creative writing from Monday, and also worked towards their green light in Reflex Math. We also quickly went through this week's spelling list, which is also posted on the English page. In the afternoon, we read, then packed into the gym for day one of our Fitness Unit. The students were welcomed with a 12 minute run and some planks today, more fitness related activities are planned for later in the week. For the final 90 minutes of the day, the students had their hands painted, as part of an art / career education project about resolutions and goal setting. To top off the day, Ms. Palmer made a visit to our class, and the students (and I) had some time to catch up with her.
HOMEWORK: Please review and study for Friday's spelling quiz, and if they don't have them already, please make sure all students have the appropriate athletic shoes for gym class, and skateboarding or sneakers will not be appropriate for our Fitness Unit. Usually the first day back after an extended break, can be a struggle, but the students shook off their collective rust, and put in a solid day's effort. We began our day with a "Find Someone Who" warmup, before transitioning to some math multiplication review. After the recess break, the class headed to the library for some time with Mme. Gammel, then returned for a quick jaunt outside for some well-deserved D.P.A. In the afternoon, the class made their table gropup shuffles, and the December Champs (the Jets) received their prizes, and had their logo retired, making way for the Maple Leafs. (See below for new table groups) Once everyone was settled in, we read two more chapters of "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". After 25 minutes of individual reading, the class was divided into two groups, one group beginning with a creative writing assignment, while the other half did Reflex Math.
HOMEWORK: Students who didn't get their green light in Reflex Math should complete that task at home tonight. (It will require access to the internet and a laptop, tablet or smart phone.) JANUARY TABLE GROUPS: CANUCKS: Ethan, Rhys, Ryan R., Sophia, Tracy & Emerson FLAMES: KG, Ryan H, Maggie, Gavin & Jeffrey OILERS: Alissa, Ryder, Alex L., Dylan, Jenna & Jack MAPLE LEAFS: Jaden, Connor, Skylar, Brielle, Alyza & Hayden CANADIENS: Gideon, Alex M., Sandhya, Slade & Abigail |
