We had an incredibly inspirational beginning to our day, with a visit from Jennifer Palmer, a 2 time Canadian Olympian. She shared her memories from the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics, and the lessons she learned as an elite gymnast competing on a global stage. She even brought in her medals, her olympic uniforms and an Olympic Flag from the 1968 Summer Olympic Games! (SUPER COOL!!!)
When we returned from the presentation, we discussed what we learned and what advice Mrs. Palmer had given us, and how we could apply it to our lives. We then talked about "persistence" and "perseverance", and I shared one of my favourite Olympic stories, Steven Bradbury's Gold Medal in Short Track Speed Skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. (See the story below) Before leaving for lunch, we read our final few chapters of "Wonder," from Summer's perspective. After lunch, we silently read, then headed to the gym to begin our minor games Olympics unit. We divided our classes into the four nations of: Canada, the United States, Japan & Korea. For the final hour of the day, we went over the expectation of what students will need to do for their Heritage Fair Research Project which we be focussing on in class over the next few weeks.
