Normally I wouldn't want to begin with studying and writing poetry, but it was poetry, French or Factoring to start our day, and seeing as we'd only briefly touched on Acrostics back in November, poetry it was. After a quick review of Limericks, Haikus, Free Verse, Ballads, and Elegies, the students were tasked with writing 3 poems about Respect. While for some it came easily, for others I could literally see the steam coming out of their ears, and while poetry isn't everyone's cup of tea, just like practicing your free throw, studying your spelling words or riding a bike, poetry takes patience and practice. Once the creative juices began flowing, the poems started flying fast and furiously. At 9:50 the class took a break from their poetry writing and spent time either in Band or with Mrs. King learning more about Health and Well-Being. After recess, they continued to refine their poetry, and for those who'd completed their three, they began working on their art work. The afternoon was a return to the gym for fitness testing, then back to class to work on art, before the grade 5s headed out for Music Class.
NOTE: I have opted not to do Spelling again this week, so that students can really focus on their Math, Poetry and Heritage Fair projects. Also, for anyone who would like to review poetry types, I posted the samples and explanations on the ENGLISH PAGE.
