In a little over a week's time, we have dovbled our class reading output on Epic, and as a class, we have collectively read over 500 books online in the past 2 weeks. Leading the way with almost 100 books is Cole, while Tayden still leads with over 30 hours of reading completed on the app! Great work guys!!
Every student had at least 2 online meet ups today. One in a small reading group setting to read "Iggy Peck, Architect", and the second was our online math lesson. I wasn't too sure how the reading groups would go, but to date, I think the small groups and the online format has actually worked really well. Math was a bit cumbersome today as we reviewed calculating fractions and decimals, but for a first attempt, I think it was also a success! It was really great to see some students step up and lead by example this morning, specifically Emerson and Owen provided strong leadership voices in their reading and math groups today. Great work all!
Parents & Guardians of Division 7 students: I wanted to reach out to each of you to express my gratitude for your support, patience and understanding as we transition from having your children learn at school, to a learning at home model of schooling. I understand that there may have been some frustrations, annoyances and even some tears, but please remember that this is a new reality for each of us, and to keep in mind that even this new way of learning, is an opportunity for growth and maturation for the students. As for your roles in the process, my expectations are limited to you being supportive of your child, and understanding them well-enough to know when to push, when to pull, or when to leave things alone. My goal is that the students should be able to accomplish 90% of the suggested learning opportunities, with little or no parental involvement, and that you are only needed in those rare occasions they need a little bump to get over the line. You are all doing an incredible job, and please know I am always available for questions or clarification through email at: [email protected]
I also acknowledge that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected every family in a different way. We are fortunate enough at James Kennedy to have an active and supportive community who are here to help in times like these. Our child care worker Sam Evans, has created a website and compiled a list of supports that I would encourage each of you to look at should you require a little extra support in these uncertain and trying times. I have linked her website to our Online Resources page, but you can also find it here: https://ycwsam.weebly.com/
Thank you all again for your help and encouragement as we travel down this new road together!
