The students had lot of questions around their Online Shopping Challenge assignments, so we did a quick lesson this morning in class on how to round, estimate and then calculate to help them better understand how to quickly estimate total costs when having to deal with taxes. One of the funnier moments this morning was when Joe turned to me and said, "All these taxes are killing me!" My reply was appropriately "welcome to the rest of your life." The students then put their new math skills to work as they continued to scour for the best deals on a car, a home, and all the necessary furnishings. Another a-ha moment came later in the morning when Phoenix's group couldn't find a 3 bedroom house for $250.000. I think they are starting to understand the challenges of working within a set budget while living in Langley. After recess, the girls met with Mrs. Bentley from Big Brothers & Sisters to talk about the Go Girls program, before heading outside to join the boys for DPA. When we returned to class, I read another 20 pages of "My Name is Seepeetza" before the students did a comparison Venn Diagram on being a student at JKE vs being a student at the Kalamak Indian Residential School in the late 1950's. To finish our day, the class watched a short introductory video on Simple Machines, took some preliminary notes, then went outside to take photos and identify simple & compound machines.
REMINDER: Please be sure to send your child with a pair of indoor shoes, preferably athletic non-marking shoes.
HOMEWORK: Students need to rewatch the Simple Machines video posted on the Science Page, and take some simple notes explaining or describing the purpose of each of the 6 simple machines. This is due FRIDAY morning in class.
