Our day started really well with a trip to the gym, and an epic game of Castle Ball. After snack it was time to head to the music room with the Ms. Hu to test drive some instruments for next year's band class. In the middle part of our day, we reviewed adding and subtracting fractions. In the afternoon we read, did some art, and attempted to do some writing. I say attempted, because the class was not on task, and our in class assignment, became a homework assignment.
HOMEWORK: For tomorrow, I need each of the students to write a 150 word composition about where they think they'll be in 10 years from now. I asked them to be optimistic, but realistic with their writing, and that it is a good copy that they hand in (or share with my via Office 365), so they may ask you to proof read and help make suggestions for them. REMINDER: Tomorrow is our field trip to the Stave Falls Powerhouse. Students should pack a brown bag lunch, and wear comfortable shoes. We are planning to leave for Mission at 9:30, and to return to the school by no later than 2:30pm. We will assign driver / chaperone groups in the morning. We began our day with a quick discussion about ways we can help protect the planet, and lessen our environmental footprint. Following our talk, the class was divided into 4 teams, and they did the "Zero Hero" challenge, in which they had to correctly put different waste items into the correct bin. Just before recess, we went outside to play some California Kickball. After recess, we had our weekly Tech session, and the students worked on Reflex Math and Typing. In the afternoon, we were treated to a concert by the Langley Ukelele Ensemble, then it was time for some DPA, followed by some much overdue art.
We plan to correct the addition and subtraction fraction questions from Tuesday tomorrow, so anyone who hasn't done so, should finish them for homework. REMINDER: Please pack comfortable shoes, a hat and a brown bag picnic lunch ready for our trip to Stave Falls Powerhouse on Friday. Parent-Drivers please meet in the class at 9am. NOTE: I sent home permission forms for two of our upcoming field trips in June, one to Playland on June 21st, and the other for the Walnut Grove Water Park on June 25th. ** Cultus Lake Waterslides is set for Wednesday, June 26th, but I don't have a permission form just yet.** It was a Math heavy day today, as we worked through how to add and subtract fractions that don't have the same denominator. To help, I also introduced Factors, and how to figure them out. I uploaded a copy of the video to the Math page just in case some are still struggling with the concept. In the earlier part of the day we continued to learn more about Natural Resources and Sources of Energy, in preparation for our trip to the Stave Falls Powerhouse later this week. After recess, we finished up our list of helpful French adjectives for the Fashion Show project. (Adjectives were typed up and can be found on the French page.) We wrapped up our day with some 4-corners soccer in the gym, and another Fractions review.
HOMEWORK: Students need to finish their Math questions from the end of the day. They don't need to be reduced to their lowest form, but they do need to be added or subtracted, and the factors should be listed for questions 11 - 15. We will go over the answers in class tomorrow. (See questions below.) So much good news to share around this morning, as four of our students won awards at the Regional Heritage Fair, and as it turns out, one of the students actually won 1 of only 3 spots at the Provincial Heritage Fair in Victoria this summer!! Congratulations to: Alissa, Ethan, Jaden and Slade for being awarded the top prize in their category, and a massive thumbs up to Hayden, for not only earning a spot in the Provincial competition, but also for scoring the highest score of any presentation at this year's Regional Heritage Fair!! As for the work today, we began with a trip to the gym for a PAWS assembly, followed by a walk outside, then a quick French lesson. After recess, it was off to the Library to see Mme. Gammel, and a visit from Mrs. Lainchbury to talk about safety in our school. In the afternoon, Hayden shared more about his visit this weekend to meet Phil Nuytten and answered some classmates' questions. At just after 1pm, we joined our Lil' Buddies for a Nature Scavenger Hunt, then finished the day with a Science activity.
It was an unbelievably beautiful day outside today, and with the mercury set to rise to nearly 30 C in the afternoon, we began our day with a trip outdoors for some Flag Tag & Team Manhunt. After snack and recess, we set ourselves to work and took some Science notes based on the video we watched on Wednesday in class. For the last half hour, the class had the chance to finish up the art projects they had started on Thursday. In the afternoon, we briefly discussed the French Fashion Show project, and broke the class into groups of 4 or 5. (You can find more information about the project on the French page.) For the final hour of our day, the class earned themselves some Read, Write, Draw & Play, and by popular demand, we finished up with some Dancing in class.
REMINDER: Tonight is the Annual James Kennedy Spring Carnival!! We practiced our French this morning, ahead of the French Fashion show that we are planning for later in the month. After a good 45 minutes of reviewing all our flashcards, we headed outside for a game of Kick Ball. After lunch, the class had some technology time for doing Typing ad Reflex Math. The afternoon, I took the non-Heritage Fair participants outside to review and mark our Fractions worksheets, while the Heritage Fair participants set up their projects in the class. After about 20 minutes all the students who were doing Math headed indoors to view and ask students about their projects.
REMINDER: Tomorrow is an early dismissal day and the students will be let out at 1:30pm. NOTE: Heritage Fair participants, please meet me at the school at 730am tomorrow morning. Parents, please arrive for pickup at 2:45pm, though we may not arrive until as late as 3:30pm. The day began with some peer-corrections of the students' writing from last week's film presentation of "Screenagers". For the students who were around to see the film, they used the time to write about their favourite school subject. After about 25 minutes, we talked about which school subjects were the class favourites, then used that data to do some fractions. After snack break, we learned more about the History of Stave Fall and the Powerhouse, and did some Q & As for team points. Following Recess, the class was divided into 2 groups with half working on their Reflex Math, while the other half worked through a fractions worksheet. After 30 minutes, the groups switched tasks. The day wrapped with some silent reading, a trip to the gym to play Badminton or Basketball, and finally a video and a discussion about Natural Resources in Science (The video can be seen on the Science Page). All in all, it was a pretty darn good day!
HOMEWORK: Students who still haven't handed in their Beavers writing assignment should do so as soon as possible, as well as anyone who still hasn't handed in their Stave Falls Powerhouse or Operation Waterproof permission forms (a new District permission form for the Swimming program was sent home today. It should be a purple coloured form). We opened our day in Canada's other official language, doing a translation exercise using the classic "Find someone who..." framework. The twist was it was entirely in French, and the students' had to put their language skills to the test first thing Monday morning. As a reward for their hard work, and to take advantage of the perfect weather outside, the class made its way to the upper field for a game of "Capture the Gold". Following recess, it was off to the Library to see Mme. Gammel. In the afternoon, we built and flew paper airplanes with our little buddies, then finished our day with some writing and art. REMINDER: Still looking for parent drivers for the trip to Stave Falls Powerhouse in Mission. The trip is slated for Friday, May 17th. If you are available to drive, please fill in the driver's form. Also, we are still missing a handful of swimming forms for our Operation Waterproof later this month. |
