REMINDER: Tuesday, May 2nd is scheduled to be our James Kennedy Track and Field Meet. Thursday, May 4th, is our Star Wars Day, and Friday, May 5th is a Professional Development Day.
What a day!! Right from the get go, the students were on their game. First with working on their French Comic Strips, then with their Spelling Quizzes, and finally with their attentiveness during our Q & A session with our guest speaker / teacher Sarah Moore. (Educator and Tech Specialist from Vancouver Island) Following the lunch break, the students took part in a tin foil boat experiment, in which they needed to individually, then collaboratively design a boat made from a 2ft x 1ft sheet of aluminum foil. Their boats were then tested to see how many marbles and glass beads their boat could hold before it sank. To cap off our day, we combined forces with Madame Stopa and Madame Marcus' class for Game Show Day, and our third instalment of Fun Fringlish Friday.

The day began with a homework check and a review of this week's spelling vocabulary. From there we had a couple of minutes for a quick game of BINGO, before the students headed to the library. After a short lesson on French greetings and conversational language, the students launched into their French Comic Strip assignment. After recess the students continued to work through their comics, and we discussed the challenges of keeping their stories to 6 frames, and we added some extra French phrases, and vocabulary to help with their work. After lunch we teamed up with Division 8 to do another practice day prior to the JKE Track and Field Meet next week. Today we finally had the chance to do the Ball Throw, in addition to the 100m, 200m & the long jump. Once we returned to class, we had just enough time to continue to work on their draft copies of their comic strips.
HOMEWORK: Students should complete their draft copies of their French Comic Strips. Please also study Spelling List #18 for tomorrow's quiz. REMINDER: Tomorrow is Fun Frenglish Friday, and it will be GAME SHOW DAY in the afternoon! Should be a ton of fun! All of the students' hard work was on display this morning, as their Robot Mazes were laid out, and the Dash Robots' coded (programmed) and ready to roll. The District Principal's meeting was held at James Kennedy Elementary earlier today, and between 9 - 10am, the door to room #105 was open for them to come in and see all the amazing learning we have been doing in our class this year. Following the Principal's visit, and a quick trip to the Music room, it was time for our Little Buddies to come see our work. In the afternoon, we had our first run through for next week's Track and Field Meet (May 2nd). Then with the sun shining, Madame Mulski kept the class outside to do some language arts and reading strategies. It was a great day in Division 10, and I am incredibly proud of the students' and their hard work.
HOMEWORK: No new homework tonight, however, please finish your sentences or stories using at least 12 of the spelling words from this week's list. (Posted on the English Page). Talk about the worst possible day to have your phone battery go dead! Division 10 and 8, did their dance routines in the gym this morning, and they were SUPER FANTABULOUSLY AWESOME!!! Only problem was, my phone battery was dead, and I could only take a few photos. (I did take a few with Mrs. Gore's phone and will hope to have them posted later this week. ) Once we returned to class, we had half an hour to work on our Coding for our Robot Mazes, then a bit of time before we worked on this week's spelling. (See homework details below). The afternoon saw us have an abbreviated reading period, followed by a Jump Rope for Heart Assembly in the gym. At the end of the day, students were given 20 minutes to work on their homework, before we corrected the multiplication, division and time sections of our Math Reviews from last week.
HOMEWORK: All students need to write our their spelling words twice. Grade 4's need to choose 12 words and write full sentences using the words in context. Grade 5s need to write a story using 12 of their spelling words. REMINDER: Students have all been told that we will be going outside tomorrow and Thursday rain or shine, to practice for our Track and Field Events. Please make sure your son/daughter has a change of running shoes, and a change of clothing, just in case they get soaked while we do our running and field events. Monday mornings can be rough on anyone, but when we went through our playoff predictions this morning...it was certainly rougher on some, than it was on others. Following the first round of the NHL playoffs, I am happy to say that some Division 10 students were able to choose 75% of the first round winners, while even the worst brackets saw students get at least 2 of the 8 series correct. Once we finished updating our individual brackets, and awarding points, we moved on to a speaking and listening exercise. Students needed to weave together a story cooperatively, at first using only 3 words at a time, then working our way up to 5. It was a great way to kick start our creativity for the day. Following music class, the students returned to go over which event they would take part in for next week's JKE track and field meet. After an unexpectedly sunny recess, it was back to class to continue to work on coding our robots for this week's Principal's visit on Wednesday. After lunch, there was time to read, before we picked up where Madame Mulski left off with some reading strategies, and two more chapters in Because of Mr. Terupt. With the sun beaming outside, we took a quick 15 minute break from our studies for some DPA on the playground, before returning indoors to put our work away and clean up.
REMINDER: Project OPERATION WATERPROOF begins May 12th, and we are still missing a handful of permission slips. A brief, but better late than never daily recap today. (Busy with after school Dad duties) The day saw the class do our writing assessments, review for spelling, take a trip to the library, practice some dynamite dancing, and we took time to continue to fine tune our programming for our Robot Mazes.
HOMEWORK: Please study for Friday's Spelling Quiz, as well as our Math Review. (Perimeter, Area, Measurement, Time, Multiplication and Division.) The students will be allowed to use their multiplication tables, however, no calculators for the review. REMINDER: Payments and permission slips are past due for the OPERATION WATERPROOF swimming program, which is being offered by the School District for our Grade 5's starting on May 12th. It was writing Wednesday in Division 10 today! Our day began with a collaborative sentence correction activity, which we then rolled into more time to work on their Easter Paragraphs. (Note: The paragraphs were due today, yet only half a dozen students came to class with their homework complete. We definitely need to do a lot better than that.) After lunch the students had their music class with Mr. Barkman, before having some time to work on their dance routines ahead of Tuesday's performances. Our day finished off with a super interesting visit from Madame Mulski in which the students learned more reading and writing strategies.
HOWEWORK: Please finish the "What Easter Means to Me" composition (3 paragraphs minimum). Also please review Spelling List #17 ahead of Friday's quiz. (Words can be found on the ENGLISH page.) NOTE: We will doing a writing assessment in class tomorrow, and a Math review quiz on Friday. The day kicked off with the students in both classes beginning to rehearse their dances as part of our JUST DANCE unit. Once we returned to room #105, the class was treated to a visit from Mrs. Pimentel and her robots. The students worked hard on their robot mazes, and a number of groups even began the process of coding their Dash robots to navigate their mazes. After recess, the students watched a short video on Easter, and were assigned a paragraph writing assignment based on "What Easter Means to Me." (See homework details below) After lunch, we had our daily silent reading followed by some DPA outside, then time to work on our Spelling Words for the week. HOMEWORK: The students need to write a composition of at least 3 paragraphs, based on "What Easter Means to Them." They should use their planning sheets that they worked on in class to help guide their writing. The paragraphs are due Wednesday. We finished up our Easter Egg Art Projects first thing this morning, before moving on to a Math review package. The students worked on their measurement, perimeter and area calculations, as well as their addition, subtraction and multiplication skills. After another inside recess, the students moved along to music class with Mr. Barkman, before returning to complete their math packages, and complete their NHL playoff brackets! In the afternoon, the class had time to read, search for and choose their JUST DANCE videos, and finished up their day with a visit from Madame Mulski.
HOMEWORK: Madame Mulski has asked every student to find a $1 word, just like they do in "Because of Mr. Terupt". Remember, each letter in the alphabet is worth their place in cents, based on their spot in the alphabet. a=1 b=2 c=3...y=25 z=26. Ex: CAT = 3 + 1 + 15 = 18 cents What better way to start your day then by Dancing!!! Well, that's exactly what we did this morning, as both Division 8 and 10 headed to the gym to cut a rug, kicking of day one of our JUST DANCE unit! After some impressive dance moves, and a bunch of elevated heart rates, we returned to class, and it was a more somber mood. For Social Studies and English, the students learned more about the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and why 100 years on, it still has an important place in Canadian History. From the videos, the class created a word web, based on the information they'd learned. I was thrilled to see the students ask such insightful questions, and give the topic its due respect. After lunch, the mood lightened again, as we headed across the school to meet up with our Little Buddies' class, for some Mother's Day & Easter Art work. Seeing as it was such as nice day, we headed outdoors for some DPA, before heading back to class to work on our own Easter Egg Art.
